Can TPMS be hacked?

September 15th, 2010

I stumbled upon this and found it to be quite interesting.

The question was raised by a joint study between the University of South Carolina and Rutgers University as whether Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems could be compromised by hackers. The potential seemed to be more of nuisance value but they did raise the questions of being able to track the vehicle using the ID of the sensor or using the sensor to overflow the vehicle systems control module. Both of those issues appear to be neatly put to rest in the article.

I suppose it’s possible that  as we see a future with internet connectivity for even your kitchen appliances,  the old school ‘Is your refrigerator running? Better go catch it!’ nuisance calls could be replaced with something more aggravating.
